Within Temptation top 10 list

In honour of the band's new release Hydra I've done a Top 10 list, which doesn't even cover all of my favourites but is as close as I can get.

The below songs are in no particular order and I've tried to find posted music videos for each chosen song. (Thank you to all those who posted on Youtube, my forever thanks!)

However, I have decided to NOT include tracks from The Unforgiving album (as it works as more of a complete narrative rather then individual songs) and their Q-Music Sessions (which to my knowledge has not had a true North American release).

Within Temptation's Hydra

This album is a lyrical illustration of just how much Within Temptation has grown musically over their career.  Hydra is a mix of classic techniques of their gothic metal roots, mainstream modern rock chords, and new pop synthesizers. There is an epic quality to the collection of songs, not just from the addition of orchestra elements or harsh guitar segments, or even Sharon den Adel's magnificent vocals. But rather from the messages in the songs, the almost poem-like narratives, which seem a return to the band's origins.

Though with a more polished sound.

This is a VERY good album overall, with a number of songs rising above the others with stronger melodies and powerful imagery. A good song will keep the audience entertained. A great song will have the audience humming (and if they're brave singing) along. A fantastic song will invoke an emotional reaction.

Below is a list of my favoured tracks from Hydra, though all of the songs have their own redeeming quality; which is a bold statement in itself, as it is rare to love every songs on a single album:

Let Us Burn
And We Run feat. Xzibit
Paradise, What About Us fest. Tarja
Silver Moonlight
Covered By Roses
Tell Me Why

This is an album worth owning.

Within Temptation's Hydra

Hydra, the newest album by the metal/rock group Within Temptation is close at hand (and by that I mean less than 24 hours)!

This album already released two very fantastic singles, the first being "Paradise (What about Us)" with operatic metal legend Tarja and the second "Dangerous" with Howard Jones, another music icon. There are two more collaborations on the album, one with Xzibit and the other with Dave Pirner.

Hopes are high that this album will deliver with poignant lyrics, powerful melodies, and the depths of meaning that previous works have given. Lately their sound has seemed to stray more towards milder forms of rock and metal, while still keeping themselves somewhat aligned with their previous sound. The previous album, Unforgiving, was very strong lyrically but the raw sound that truly enthralled was lacking somewhat. Listening to the released singles have been inconclusive in finding which way the new album will lean.

In honour of Hydra I will be working on a list of favourite Within Temptation songs as well as a review of the new album. In the mean time, however, enjoy these links to the released videos!
